DISASTER ACTION TEAM (DAT)

“This is a group of local volunteers who are responsible for contacting the victims of a local disaster such as a family fire or other local disaster. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and respond to any local disaster, including a local fire, to be sure that the affected client has a safe place to stay, clothing and food. Volunteers receive special training and are scheduled on a regular basis to respond when necessary. Call the chapter to schedule training.”

 

SHELTER OPERATION

Prerequisite 3066. Prepares Red Cross and other agencies’ staff to manage shelter operations as a team in order to meet the needs of people displaced during disasters. Length: 3 hours.


FAMILY SERVICES: PROVIDING EMERGENCY SERVICES

Prerequisite 3066. Teaches workers to assess emergency needs, provide direct financial assistance and to make referrals to other agencies. Includes emergency disaster procedures, forms, referral resources and the development of interviewing skills. Length: 7 ½ hours


DISASTER HEALTH SERVICES

Prerequisite 3066. Teaches health services paid and volunteer staff how to provide emergency and preventative health service, plus emotional support to victims and workers at the local level. Length: ½ day


DISASTER ASSESSMENT

Prerequisite 3066. Prepares Red Cross volunteer workers in obtaining and reporting damage to homes and other buildings in a disaster-affected area. Length: 3 hours


COMMUNITY DISASTER EDUCATION

Designed for those responsible for organizing, delivering and evaluating local Community Disaster Education efforts. It provides the tools and requisite knowledge in order for managers to build and enhance community disaster education plans and activities. Provides information about how the public responds to disaster and what people need to know.


LOGISTICS OVERVIEW AND SIMULATION

Prerequisite 3066. Helps personnel identify supply and logistics preparedness measures that should take place at the local unit level, and to become familiar with Red Cross policies and procedures that apply on locally administered disaster operations. Length: 7 ½ hours


DISASTER MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Prerequisite 3066. Applicants must be either licensed/certified OR eligible if employed as a mental health provider in a state not requiring the same OR RN with Psych Nursing training and experience. Prepares qualified Red Cross/Mental Health professional to provide appropriate interventions to meet immediate disaster-related mental health needs of Red Cross workers, their families and disaster victims per ARC Regulations and Procedures for disaster events of all sizes.


LOCAL DISASTER VOLUNTEERS

Provides training in how to identify resources to meet the local disaster volunteers requirements of a disaster, and prepare the appropriate forms.


STAFFING

Prerequisites 3066, 3087-1, and experience in the staffing function, as CDV, or similar role on a Chapter or Nationally administered disaster operation. Assists Red Cross paid and volunteer staff to participate in the staffing function on a disaster operation which extends beyond the scope of an operation executed by a single Red Cross unit and which is often nationally administered.


PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Prerequisite 3066. The purpose of this course is to assist Red Cross volunteer and paid staff in working with the Public Affairs function on locally administered disaster operation and to initiate the Public Affairs function on a larger relief operation. Participants will be Red Cross paid and volunteer staff, especially public information specialists, public affairs coordinators, chapter chairpersons, chapter managers, and others who find themselves a spokesperson for Red Cross during a disaster.


LIAISON

Prerequisite 3066. The purpose is this course is to prepare participants to build and maintain collaborative relationships designed to enhance the community’s ability to respond to disaster.


SUPERVISION IN DISASTER

Prerequisite 3066, and the basic or intermediate course for the function in which the applicant expects to become a supervisor. Experience as a worker in the function on which the applicant expects to become a supervisor.

The purpose of this course is to prepare participants to function effectively as Disaster Services supervisors. Participants will be Red Cross paid and volunteer staff who demonstrates the potential to serve as supervisors on disaster relief operations.

New volunteers can learn what the Red Cross does in Indiana County and how they can help. There is a place for everyone depending on their personal skills, aspirations and time commitment.

There is no charge for disaster training.
