The World’s Problem
Millions of children are at risk from measles. More than 410,000 children under the age of 5 die of measles each year. Measles can cause pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis, and even blindness. Because it spreads through the air, measles is one of the most contagious diseases known.
What the Red Cross has Done
As of 2005 the American Red Cross Measles Initiative has traveled to more than 41 African countries, saving more than 1.2 million lives. Since 1999 measles related deaths have dropped by more than 60%.
